‘Guys with Kids’ Premieres on September 26th

0

I didn’t miss the premiere of Guys with Kids, but apparently I missed the sneak peak.  How did that happen?  Truth be told, this is not one of the shows I’m excited about seeing this fall.  Maybe it’s because I’m past the baby stage of life and the thought of watching adult men act like idiots when it comes to raising kids has very limited appeal to me.  Maybe it’s because a watching a show starring babies is like spending my evenings trolling the Internet for funny pictures of kittens to post on Facebook (I prefer my babies on TV to be in commercials and being given witty adult dialogue.)  Or maybe I missed the sneak peak because I already know think I know how this one is going to go.

Never fear though, Guys with Kids is officially premiering on Wednesday, September 26th, at 8:30 p.m. so we’ll all get a second chance to give the show a first chance.  And maybe, just maybe I’m wrong.  I watched the trailer again, and after getting past the been-there-done-that recycled baby jokes, there were a few situations and lines that made me go, “hmmmm… maybe this show will be better than I think.”  I also have to remind myself that there are millions of baby lovers who also love to troll the Internet for funny kitten pictures.

So you’ll have to judge for yourself. Watch the trailer and tell me what you think.  And after the premiere, share your thoughts again.

‘The Inbetweeners’

MTV premieres its new series The Inbetweeners tonight at 10:30 EST. The trailer is good for some laughs. What do you think? Are you watching, not watching, or wondering why American development executives can’t find a way to create their own original content instead of repurposing another British show?

Reba Redux

0

I have to admit, I was never a fan of Reba McIntyre’s first foray into sitcomdom, so the idea of a new Reba sitcom is less than enticing.  I know she has a huge following and networks love “sure things” when it comes to new programming, but Malibu Country seems like such a retread I’m not sure I have the energy even to watch the pilot.

I always try to imagine the pitch session for a show like this.  Could the higher ups really have thought jilted country signer moves to Malibu with her Mom and kids was an original idea that would strike comedic gold?  I doubt it.  It’s much more likely the show producers uttered the word “Reba” and the network started signing the deal.  They probably didn’t even have to look up her Q score.  But how often is this successful?  How often have first time around sitcom successes returned to primetime with a new show and found another hit?  It’s rare.  Why?  I believe it is because people watch sitcoms for the situation (writing and comedy) and less for the star power.  Sure, Kelsey Grammer succeeded with Frasier after a successful run on Cheers.  He’s also flopped with one or two network shows since. Same for the rest of the cast of Cheers. And don’t even get me started about the casts from Friends and Seinfeld.

I believe that you are more likely to find success with a sitcom by casting lesser known to unknown actors (and there are quite a few to choose from).  Before Friends launched, most viewers had only really ever seen Courtney Cox.  Of course, there are exceptions to my “rule,” but more often than not characters are more believable when they are portrayed by an unknown.  Known actors, especially those who have been on a sitcom for several years, bring too much baggage to a new show.  I think most viewers can’t let go of that actor’s alter ego (eg. Bob Denver was Gilligan, John Ratzenberger is Cliff Clavin, and Jason Alexander is George Castanza).  For the actor, it’s both a blessing and a curse.

So back to Reba.  What we have here appears to be the typical fish out of water scenario.  Country girl in Malibu launching her singing career.  Sad to say this storyline seems like it was born out of a network executive’s conversations with his or her spouse on their way to a Reba concert.  But maybe I’m wrong.  Watch the trailer.  Tell me what you think.

Bitter, Party of Five

So what do you do if you’re an actor and your pilot isn’t picked up?  Probably the most therapeutic thing to do is shoot your own Youtube video about not getting picked up.

Of course if the sitcom (Downwardly Mobile) was as funny as the video, I can see why it didn’t get picked up. I’m going to suggest they get a writer or two to help with episode two.

However, these actors should look on the bright side. If the show had been picked up, they would have had to work with Roseanne… a fate worse than cancellation.

FOX Launches Laughs Tonight

September 25, 2012

FOX will be premiering its new season of comedy tonight with two new episodes of The New Girl and the pilots for Ben and Kate and The Mindy Project.  While Mindy has received a lot of buzz because of her Office connection, BnK seems to be a fun, sweet, not-as-racy offering, which doesn’t seem to fit with Mindy and The New Girl.    We’ll have to see how these three shows fit together or if they’re just a temporary teaming.

6 Steps to Writing Your First Sitcom Spec Script

Writing a sitcom looks pretty easy, doesn’t it?  Twenty-five minutes of families or hipster friends sharing witty banter amidst getting themselves into sticky situations that faintly mirror real life.  How can that be hard?  In fact it is very hard, and may be arguably the hardest writing around.  Why?  Because not only do you...
